- CASA Pre-Conference Session: “Three Little Words” – Presented by Ashley Rhodes-Courter, Author. For more information about Ashley Rhodes-Courter click here.
Ashley Rhodes-Courter spent almost ten years in foster care, living in 14 different foster homes. Ashley will discuss her time in foster care and highlight the CASA worker that was able to get her out of abusive situations and eventually find her an adoptive family. Today, Ashley is a New York Times Bestseller, former CASA, and foster parent. Through her experiences, she will shed light on what it means to be a foster youth, what tools are important when working with youth, and how one person can change the life of a child.
- “Thinking Like A Writer- A Workshop for Lawyers on Effective Writing and Editing” – Presented by Tim Terrell, Professor at Emory Law School. For more information about TIm Terrell click here.
- “Developmental Origins of Poor Emotional and Behavioral Regulation, Disordered Attachment, and the Links to Delinquent Behavior” - Presented by Dr. George Davis and Dr. Bruce Perry.
Although it is not always acknowledged as such, early abuse and neglect is one of the foremost causes of delinquency and the more general disturbances of conduct. Delinquency is usually considered by the general public to be a social rather than a psychiatric problem, even though the roots of serious conduct disturbances are clearly based in poor impulse control, unmanaged anger, damaged attachment capacity and the resultant deficits in empathy and social responsibility. When reviewed retrospectively, the overwhelming majority of incarcerated adolescents have histories of early neglect and abuse. On the other hand, some of the most prominent consequences of early neglect and abuse are the inability to regulate emotions and behavior. This presentation will address the developmental origins of poor emotional and behavioral regulation, disordered attachment, and the links to delinquent behavior.
