CLI 2010: When the economy gives you lemons, make lemonade!

Current economic realities are challenging child welfare and juvenile justice professionals and advocates to be creative and seek opportunity in a changing economy. Creativity in the face of economic challenge is this year’s call to action. The 2010 CLI will include three plenary sessions and over 35 workshops designed to stimulate creative thinking and implement innovative approaches in a climate where we are being asked to do more with less.

We are fortunate to have three diverse but complementary plenary speakers. Shay Bilchik, founder and Director of the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute at the 2010 CLI. Mr. Bilchik's opening plenary will focus on the importance of collaboration and cross system strategies. In these changing economic times it is more important then ever that juvenile justice and child welfare systems coordinate services. The 2010 opening plenary will provide conference participants with the knowledge and skills to create lasting system change.
Thursday’s plenary will further explore opportunities for meaningful collaboration. Professor Eileen Mayers Pasztor from the Department of Social Work, California State University, Long Beach will challenge assumptions about child welfare policy and practice. Dr. Pasztor will speak from her experience as a trainer, curriculum developer, and foster and adoptive parent.

Friday morning, Judge James Payne will close the CLI with a call to action. Judge Payne is currently the Director of the Indiana Department of Child Services. He reinforces the message that child welfare and juvenile justice efforts need to strengthen collaborations and think creatively about partnerships during changing economic times.
